Sex is Emotion in Motion
Happy National Sex Day! It’s a day when we’re supposed to celebrate sex, love, connection, fun, pleasure — all the good things in life. At Pleasure & Intimacy we encourage you to celebrate sex everyday, whether you're solo or partnered up and we encourage you to broaden your idea of what sex encompasses.
Traditionally, sex has been defined as solely a physical act between two individuals, but it is so much more than that. It involves a wide range of behaviors, feelings, and communication between partners that cannot be easily categorized. Unfortunately, quality, sex-positive education isn't something many schools offer and with what we see on TV or in social media it's not surprising that so many of us approach our sex lives with uncertainty and unrealistic expectations.
There are certain qualities that are commonly associated with satisfying sexual experiences. These include open communication, mutual consent, respect, trust, and emotional and physical connection. Sex is also characterized by the ability to listen to your partner's needs and desires, feeling comfortable and safe with your partner, exploring and trying new things, and having mutual pleasure. Sex doesn't necessarily mean achieving orgasm or engaging in certain sexual acts. Rather, it's about enjoying the moment, being present, and experiencing intimacy and pleasure in a way that feels good and fulfilling for both partners.
A more encompassing definition of sex can help to promote healthier relationships, increase understanding and acceptance of diverse sexual orientations and practices, and ultimately lead to a more inclusive and accepting society. To achieve this, it is crucial that we educate ourselves about the various ways sex can be expressed and strive to eliminate outdated and discriminatory views about sexuality.
With the voices of some incredible folks namely Dr. Emily Morse, John and Julie Gottman, Esther Perel, Dr. Laurie Mintz to name a few we are now able to have open and frank discussions about sex, sexuality, gender expression and connection.
Especially today, whether you are solo or partnered up, we hope that you will with an open mind take time to explore your desires. Remember, your sexuality is a natural and beautiful aspect of who you are and should be celebrated!
